For many of us the idea of a comfortable road bike that will serve for long hours in the saddle but that will hold it’s own and inspire us to push ourselves when the moment calls for it, is the holy grail in road cycling. The Cannondale Synapse Carbon is such a bike. It is a beautiful blend of thoughtful design and a no-holds-barred approach to technology. A marriage of light weight and rapid acceleration found in many race bikes and a more relaxed position coupled with stable handling and SAVE micro-suspension gives rise to a bike that cuts the harshness out of the long-haul without sacrificing its sporting soul. From the Cobbles of Belgium to Italian Gran Fondos the Synapse Carbon is for riders seeking a balance of aggressive performance and forgiving comfort.
The High Modulus (Hi-Mod or HM) version of this remarkably comfortable bike is the next stage in the development of the ultimate frame. Like the SuperSix Evo HM the Synapse HM uses a greater percentage of High Modulus carbon fibre in the lay-up of the frame. This helps to reduce the weight thereby increasing the stiffness-to-weight ratio making for a more responsive and reactive ride with a more racy feel. Ultimately the bike underneath you will be easier to maneuver, lighter and quicker to react both in terms of acceleration and handling. Every other feature specific to the Synapse range remains the same:
The SAVE Plus chain and seat-stay design takes the original ‘Synapse Active Vibration Elimination’ further and is designed for supreme comfort. The broad, flat stays retain the lateral stiffness which helps transmit your power to the wheels while absorbing small vibrations and remaining comfortable. At the front end the story is the same, the carbon fork again employs the SAVE system, the fork flattens along its length to produce a smooth ride under the bars without compromising cornering performance. Combined with a slightly longer wheelbase and the 2.5mm taller head tube of the Performance Geometry, the Synapse HM offers a more relaxed riding position, greater stability and confident cornering; advantageous for those long Sunday rides and sportives when the pressure begins to tell after a few hours in the saddle.
Like its racier siblings the CAAD 10 and SuperSix, the Synapse HM uses the Cannondale-created BB30 (a market leading bottom bracket platform) and coupled with previously mentioned tube shapes means the Cannondale Synapse HM has impressive stiffness to weight figures; especially when considering the relative comfort and price. Ultimately this means that the energy you put into the frame is not wasted but instead is transmitted into forward momentum and gives stunning acceleration.
There is an often held belief that more relaxed bikes are sluggish by comparison but this is certainly not the case with the Synapse. Cannondale are extremely proud of the fact that their bikes have a unique ‘feel’ and they are quick to point out that despite the high levels of comfort proffered by the Synapse HM, it is still a race bike at heart with a lively quality that puts a smile on your face when you put it through its paces.
There is a good chance that the roads you frequent are far from the glassy smooth surfaces found on the continent but more akin to the brutish surfaces witnessed in the Northern Classics, as such the Synapse HM could be for you with its ability to keep you limber and fresh over the rough stuff and ready for the sprint.
The Synapse HM Ultegra is equipped with Shimano Ultegra 10 speed shifting components and is married to an FSA SLK Carbon BB30 chainset in order to maximise your efficiency. Finishing kit is Cannondale's own C1 stem and bar with Mavic Yksion Pro tyres adorning the Ksyrium Equipe S Wheelset.
The bike is available in 6 sizes from 48cm to 61cm.
