2014 Cannondale CAAD 10 (105)

Season:2014

Brand:Cannondale

Code:VAR2023WHT

The racing bicycle has evolved over the years. We started with steel tubing; the industry then began to use aluminium due to its higher stiffness to weight ratio which meant that bikes could be built to be both more responsive and lighter. Now we find ourselves in the carbon age, chosen both for the opportunity to tailor the orientation of the fibres and as such its capacity to make bikes with a far improved ride quality than was previously possible.

A great deal of research has been invested into carbon fibre technologies; making super light frames such as the Cannondale SuperSix Evo which represent all the best qualities of carbon fibre. However one must not ignore the potential that aluminium has in racing bikes, a potential that the Cannondale CAAD 10 showcases expertly.

The Cannondale CAAD 10 is the most sophisticated, highest performance aluminium race bike on the market and is lighter, stiffer and smoother riding than many elite carbon frames, it exudes a lively and communicative ride-feel that comes from the most advanced aluminium forming techniques in the world. 'Smartforming' is a complex mix of hydroforming, taper-butting, double pass smooth welding, heat treating and mechanical shaping that yields lighter and stronger frames.

Starting from the front the CAAD 10 features a 11/8” to 11/4” tapered head tube to improve the front end stiffness and handling. This head tube sits around a 390g carbon 'Speed SAVE' fork with tapered carbon steerer, designed specifically for this bike. The dropouts are offset in order to give greater fork angle which improves vertical compliance and comfort without affecting lateral stiffness or handling.

Moving down the frame the top and down tubes are noticeably more sculpted than they were on its predecessor CAAD9. The down tube is significantly deeper were it meets the head tube, again to add front end stiffness and improve the handling. The top tube flattens as it approaches the seat tube and runs into the very wide seat stays which aids the broad improvements in lateral stiffness.

The main improvements have come in the rear end of the CAAD 10. The chain stays feature Cannondale’s Speed SAVE technology as found on the carbon Synapse models. As such they are very flat and broad allowing them to flex vertically whilst at the same time being exceptionally laterally stiff, pushing all the power back from Cannondale’s trademark BB30 bottom bracket into the rear wheel. The same applies to the seat stays which are designed to flex vertically but still transfer power with the utmost efficiency. Ultimately this means that the CAAD 10 rides with the comfort found in a quality Carbon frame but with the weight and cost savings of aluminium, all the while handling like a race bike should: super sharp cornering with a a lively and direct feel that keeps the rider informed and ready to react.

All the work Cannondale have put into the CAAD 10 has resulted in a bike that is impressive, even when compared with bikes for twice the price. This bike is stiff, even when compared to lower and middle range carbon; the flat chain stays really do transfer all your power to the rear wheel, making a bike that is ideal for road racing and time trials alike – the long geometry lends itself well to settling down into a smooth line whilst the stiffness allows for fast changes in pace. The Cannondale CAAD 10 is light too, impressively so. The frame weighs just 1150g (size 56) which would be good for a mid range carbon frame, this means that it is possible to build the Cannondale CAAD 10 up such that it falls below the 6.8kg UCI weight limit.

The ride would be considered firm when pitted against some of the more relaxed sportive style carbon frames around, however the Cannondale CAAD 10 is not a sportive bike. Indeed this is a bike that is engineered to go fast, which it does admirably. It is a comfortable ride compared to its competition, not least every other aluminium bike out there, but it is also extremely stiff where you want it to be.

We love this bike and the innovation that is attached to it. Road cycling is without a doubt a sport that is made by the fashion that surrounds it, because of this and the trend in the market to try and get carbon at every price point the potential of aluminium is often overlooked. The Cannondale CAAD 10 however is simply stunning and has left us feeling like our wallets should be a little lighter given what we are riding away with.

The Cannondale CAAD 10 105 is available in eight men’s sizes from 48cm to 63cm. It is available with a Shimano105 build married to an FSA Gossamer Pro BB30 specific chainset. Wheels are Shimano RS11 partnered with the fast and reliable Schwalbe Lugano folding tyres while finishing kit is taken care of with Cannondale's C3 lightweight aluminium parts.
