2014 Cannondale Synapse Sram RED Carbon (Hi-Mod)

Season:2014

Brand:Cannondale

Code:VAR2152GRN

The Cannondale Synapse has become a mainstay of their range, being as it is one of the finest all-round road bikes. The Carbon version is a beautiful blend of thoughtful design and a no-holds-barred approach to technology. A marriage of light weight and rapid acceleration found in many race bikes and a more relaxed position coupled with stable handling and SAVE micro-suspension gives rise to a bike that cuts the harshness out of the long-haul without sacrificing its sporting soul. From the Cobbles of Belgium to Italian Gran Fondos, the Synapse Carbon is for riders seeking a balance of agressive performance and forgiving comfort.

The High Modulus (Hi-Mod or HM) version of this remarkably comfortable bike is the next stage in the development of the ultimate frame. Like the SuperSix Evo HM the Synapse HM uses a greater percentage of High Modulus carbon fibre in the lay-up of the frame. This helps to reduce the weight thereby increasing the stiffness-to-weight ratio making for a more responsive and reactive ride with a more racy feel. Ultimately the bike underneath you will be easier to maneuver, lighter and quicker to react both in terms of acceleration and handling.

The Synapse Carbon Hi-Mod has undergone a few changes since last season and has been ridden by one of the sport's most entertaining riders, Peter Sagan. The developments made by Cannondale and their pro team have yielded an even more desireable frame particularly if you are looking for something to ride or race over testing roads and higher mileage.

The 2014 Hi-Mod Carbon Synapse has a geometry that sits between Elite Race (EVO) and Upright Comfort (Synapse Aluminium) and is what Cannondale have dubbed S.E.R.G or Synapse Endurance Race Geometry. A slightly taller headtube than the SuperSix EVO yet lower than the Synapse Alloy coupled with a slightly slacker head angle and a longer wheelbase give a frame that is ideal for long days in the saddle and that remains confident in terms of handling regardless of road surface.

Like it's predecessor, the 2014 Synapse Hi-Mod Carbon utilises SAVE micro -suspension technology whereby certain areas of the frame are flattened to allow a degree of flexion that not only reduces energy-sapping vibration but allows the wheels to track better on uneven surfaces. This year however, Cannondale have developed the idea further: The Helixed shapes of the chain and seat stays in conjunction with carbon lay-up and an offset fork drop-out better allow the frame to dissipate road buzz while allowing greater wheel tracking to give a confident ride whether the rider is seated or out of the saddle. The Seat tube and seatpost are also altered for 2014 and the Synapse carbon features a scalloped seat tube, a smaller diameter post (25.4mm as opposed to last seasons 27.2mm) and a collarless seatclamp. These 3 features combine to allow a seat tube that offers greater flex one way whilst the seatpost flexes further in the opposite direction, again increasing comfort.

You may think that all this flex would lead to a frame or bike that is somewhat inefficient in terms of power delivery. Cannondale have used the same approach with their BallisTec carbon lay-up and design with the Synapse Carbon, as that used with the SuperSix EVO which has the highest stiffness to weight figures in the world. In addition, Cannondale's new Power Pyramid and BB30A design offer maximum stiffness with minimal weight. Look closely at the seattube just above the bottom bracket area and you will see that the Seat tube splits asymmetrically to meet the new, wider 73mm BB30A bottom bracket shell. The asymmetry balances the drive forces created by the rider whilst the BB30A creates a stiffer platform from which to deliver those forces to the wheels. Ultimately this means that the energy you put into the frame is not wasted but instead is transmitted into forward momentum and gives stunning acceleration.

There is an often held belief that more relaxed bikes are sluggish by comparison but this is certainly not the case with the Synapse Carbon Hi-Mod. Cannondale are extremely proud of the fact that their bikes have a unique ‘feel’ and they are quick to point out that despite the high levels of comfort proffered by the Synapse Hi-Mod Carbon, it is still a race bike at heart with a lively quality that puts a smile on your face when you put it through its paces.

There is a good chance that the roads you frequent are far from the glassy smooth surfaces found on the continent but more akin to the brutish surfaces witnessed in the Northern Classics, as such the Synapse Carbon could be for you with its ability to keep you limber and fresh over the rough stuff and ready for the sprint.

Stiff, fast and comfortable. The Cannondale Synapse Hi-Mod Carbon is the ideal balance between raw power and all-day rideability, race proven under Peter Sagan with dialled vertical compliance the Synapse Hi-Mod Carbon redefines Endurance and will suit riders looking to go harder for longer.

There are several models in the range including three Hi-Mod versions which utilise High- and Super High- modulus carbon fibres which save weight and add stiffness to the frames. This model features SRAM's new RED22 groupset with Cannondale's own Hollowgram SiSL2 SpideRing BB30 chainset and Mavic's Ksyrium Elite S wheelset.
