Pinarello FP50 Dogma 65.1 Think 2 FRAME (859) Naked

Season:2014

Brand:Pinarello

Code:PFSD6859-

It was to be no easy task to improve upon the frame that has taken the champions of both Sky and Movistar to numerous victories, seen Wiggins pedal into yellow and move the world champion sprinter Mark Cavendish to claim, "this frame is perfect" after his first ride aboard the Dogma 2. With the aid of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and with the experiences and feedback from the professional teams, Pinarello took the Dogma 60.1 and made it stiffer, lighter and more aerodynamic. Now, in collaboration with their partner Torayca, they have bettered the best with an improved carbon lay-up in the Dogma 65.1 Think 2.

The majority of features and improvements made in the development of the Dogma 2 persist in the Think 2. Pinarello knew that the Asymmetrical design of the Dogma 60.1 was advantageous (indeed every road bike in the Pinarello range is now asymmetric) however, not a company to rest on their laurels they put considerable resources into bettering the advances made with the Dogma, with particular emphasis on 2 key areas. Firstly with regards to aerodynamics and secondly to stiffness at the fork-frame interface. With huge advances in materials and technology dramatically reducing frame weights in recent years, and given that the UCI have a minimum weight limit for the bikes used in their races, much of the focus in modern road bike development is now on aerodynamics. With this in mind and by employing CFD, Pinarello reduced the impact the front of the bike has on drag by 6% on the Dogma. This came with a re-design of the Onda 2 fork and how it interacts with the air and with the frame. The crown of the fork integrates with the frame and the ribbing that was present on its predecessor has been removed to clean-up airflow over the fork legs. This is also true of the front end of the frame itself – ribbing has been dramatically reduced throughout. Additionally, the Dogma 65.1 Think 2 is now routed internally for either Mechanical or Electronic groupsets and this further improves airflow while simultaneously neatens the look of the bike. Furthermore, the use of  a 1.5” lower headset bearing and tapered steerer on the fork have increased the stiffness of the front end of the bike by a huge 19%. On the road, this translates into more predictable handling and improved braking efficiency.

In terms of developing the element of asymmetry with the Dogma Think 2, Pinarello used Finite Element Analysis to further study the variances in deflection placed on a frame whilst under load in riding conditions. The frame-fork interface aside – the biggest change to frame design came by actually shifting the position of the top tube to the right which helps to further balance the forces applied through the bike – the original work done at the rear of the bike remains largely unchanged from the Dogma 60.1. The single biggest change over the Dogma 2 is the use of Torayca’s 65HM1K carbon fibre. The fruit of their efforts is the completely new and exclusive 65Ton HM 1K carbon fiber that is stronger, more rigid and more resistant than any previous variety. This new frame is more rigid, more reactive and even better prepared for the rigors of cycling. The two numbers in the nomenclature represent the impact resistance of the frame in tonnes per square centimetre (65) and the weave pattern used in the finish of the carbon fibre – in this case, a 1K.  65HM1K is the strongest carbon used by Pinarello and the 1K weave is used not only for its look but for the strength it offers over uni-directional fibres, for example.

Like the Dogma 60.1 and Dogma 2 the 65.1 Think 2 uses Torayca’s innovation known as ‘nano alloy’; minute particles of alloy that will explode upon the absorption of a heavy impact, taking the force that would normally fracture the carbon fibres. Even without the nano alloy technology, Toray’s 65HM1K carbon is over 30% more impact resistant than the 50HM1K carbon found in the Prince Carbon, the nano alloy improves the impact resistance of the Pinarello Dogma 65.1 Think 2 by more than 25% further still .

The forming process is also a remove from the usual 'bladder' construction whereby carbon is laid over an inflated bladder, remnants of which are left inside the frame after forming. In the case of the Dogma, the carbon is laid over a polystyrene mould that is dissolved at the end of the process with a recoverable solvent. This has the effect of creating a carbon structure that avoids wrinkling and ‘voids’ that can create potential weak spots in the frame. It also leaves the internal surface incredibly smooth making internal cable routing far easier.

The use of these technologies is ideal for racing and high mileage riding where the risk of a crash or fall is significantly increased and if nothing else this gives the Dogma 65.1 Think 2 the nudge on similarly priced competitors frames. Combine that comforting knowledge with the deft handling capabilities of this Italian masterpiece and you have a frame that helps you believe you can make any turn at speed. Its positive handling is direct and immediate while the asymmetry provides balanced power transfer that has you checking the computer to see that you're actually fast - trust us, you will be it just feels effortless.

Like the Dogma 2 before it, this new version has an effortless ride feel that will help you see out the longest ride or race with freshness in your legs for the final climb and it will immediately answer you when you ask it to surge for the line in the sprint. The additional stiffness in the fork only adds to the already confidence inspiring cornering and precise handling while the 14% increase in lateral stiffness, the weight saving and the improved aerodynamics just make you faster.

The Dogma 65.1 Think 2 has a relatively simple task in terms of following on from the Dogma 2 but with the increasing importance of electronic groupsets, the Pinarello Lab has worked diligently to produce a frame that is built for both mechanical and electronic transmissions. The new Dogma 65.1 Think 2 is designed for perfect integration for electronic groups with internal cable routing designed specifically for their particular cable widths both for Campagnolo and Shimano systems and make an already desirable frame even more so.

Available in 12 sizes (including 3 sloping. The frame takes an Italian BB and braze-on front mech and is supplied with fork, headset and seatpost.
