Garmin Vector 2S Power Pedal : Large Pod

Brand:Garmin

Code:GMV5503

Garmin's Vector and Vector 2 Power Pedal systems are one of the most comprehensive in terms of data provision, offering left and right power in a package that it easily transferable between bikes. Despite the recent reduction in price from £1350 to £1199, they do however remain expensive, particularly if you don't need the left/right data and wish to simplify your power training.

Enter the new Garmin Vector 2S. Using the same hardware, the Vector 2S provides a single power pedal system with one power pedal (left) and one pedal with the same body but a standard axle bereft of strain gauges. This dramatically reduces the cost of putting power on your machines but, uniquely, leaves the upgrade path open for the addition of the right hand power pedal at a later date should your love of metrics increase or your training demand the additional data for refining technique.

The unit works by the addition of strain gauges along the axle of the pedal, these send a signal back to the transmitter on the crank arm which will in turn register on your Garmin head unit. The way the pedal works also means that it will register cadence without the need for a magnet on the crank arm; as such you get all the data you need, all of the time. The Pedals are ANT+ compatible, meaning that they can be used with a range of other ANT+ devices as well as Garmin's Edge 500 / 510 and 800 / 810 / 1000 and upper echelon ForeRunner Units.

For us the main benefit of these pedals is their ease of use and their transferablility, in addition, the fact that they work with the Garmin head units is a major plus for most riders. Polar and Look make a set of excellent power measuring pedals already which do all the same things as the Garmin model, so why would you change? The answer is pretty simple. Garmin are renowned for making fantastic GPS units. There is not a single member of staff here who doesn’t use an Edge Series device and this is down to the fact that we can map rides on the PC and then just go and do it. This means that we get to explore the countryside, go further and enjoy our riding that little bit more. The addition of power means that we will get more out of both our long weekend rides and the shorter interval work during the week.

Riding to power is far more accurate and consistent than riding to speed or heart rate. Speed fluctuates due to the conditions and profile of the ride and heart rate varies enormously according to fatigue, diet and a whole plethora of other aspects. In the past it has always been the case that power meters were hugely expensive, heavy and a pain to fit. Housing the unit in the crank means it is difficult to swap between bikes and a rear hub presents the problem of which wheelset do you put it in? As such the pedal seems like the sensible place in which to house a strain gauge, it is the most immediate place to which power is applied so there is no deviation due to flex in the crank or frame and as stated earlier it gives the rider the opportunity to measure power from both feet individually.

Overall this is a pretty neat little piece of kit which opens up power meters to a broader audience. It leaves nothing lacking and allows you to get the most out of your cycling all of the time. Plus which it is significantly cheaper than the competitive products from other brands meaning that there are all but no downsides!

Like the original Garmin Vectors, the Vector S units are available with a Standard pod for cranks between 12-15mm and this Large Pod which better suits larger cranks from 15-18mm.

  • Power is the optimum metric used by professional cyclists to monitor their performance
  • Unaffected by weather conditions or your position, only training to power ensures truly objective analysis of your training progress
  • With Vector 2S, Garmin have made power available in a package that is quick to install, simple to use, lightweight and almost maintenance free
  • The cutting edge piezoresistive silicon strain gauges are protected and sealed inside the left hand Vector pedal axle, requiring no recalibration or adjustment
  • Bespoke Keo-compatible pedals designed specifically for Vector mean that the entire system only adds 25 grams of weight compared to composite Look Keo 2 Max's
  • Switch easily from bike to bike; once installed Vector recalibrates in seconds making it perfect for those with multiple bikes
  • Integrated cadence sensor removes need for separate chain stay sensor
  • The pedal pod is neatly positioned adjacent to the crank arm, powered by a replaceable lithium 2032 battery with 175 hour runtime
  • Vector 2S works with any power compatible ANT head unit but is optimised for Garmin Edge 1000, 510 and 810
  • Choose Vector 2S standard for use with cranks that have 12 - 15 mm crank thickness and up to 38 mm crank width and Vector 2S Large for crank dimensions above
  • Box includes 1 power pedal, 1 normal pedal, 1 standard pod and cleats with 6 degrees of float, plus an ANT USB stick for updating firmware
