Pioneer SGY68 Ultegra Left Hand Power Meter

Season:2016

Brand:PIONEER

Code:PIONEER-SGY68-

Pioneer may be more renowned for their Hi-Fi and Television products than for cycling products. However, the Japanese electronics giant has recently entered the market with its Power Meter systems after several years and thousands of kilometres of testing under several pro cycling teams.

It is something to enter a market that is rapidly saturating with Power measuring products and you would think it would be difficult to offer something that hadn't already been done at any particular price point. Pioneer have approached the measurement of power in a slightly different manner than usual, designing a 'system' of power components that can be entered into from a variety of directions and which is modular, allowing for future upgrade paths dependent on the individual and varied goals of each rider.

There are 3 basic elements in Pioneer's system all of which can be used 'stand-alone' or in any combination.

This Ultegra SGY-68 is a 'Single Pedaling Monitor Sensor' similar to a Stages Left Hand Crank arm Power meter and essentially works in exactly the same way. Pioneer have a series of strain gauges mounted within the left hand arm of (currently) a Shimano Ultegra 6800 or Dura Ace 9000 crank arm. This power pod also contains the battery compartment. The system is therefore relatively simple to fit and transfer between bikes but the similarities end there. The first thing to note with the crank arm is that the battery housing is separated from the electronics within - something that was not true of the first generation pods found on Stages meters and that has been a bug-bear for both Stages and consumers alike.

The stand-out difference however, is in the measurement of power in itself. Pioneer claim that the complexity of their strain gauges is such that there isn't currently software that has been written, nor a head-unit that can handle - the potential for information that can be displayed and analysed. This bodes well for the future but in the immediacy, Pioneer's new system is the world's first to display both 'force' and 'direction of force' every 30o of rotation - more than Garmin Vectors. It does this by detecting minute changes in strain on the crank every 30˚ during pedaling, the system measures "force" and "direction of force" in 12 locations per cycle. In order to take full advantage of this information however, you will need to link up Pioneer's new Head Unit to provide a real-time, graphical representation of pedaling. This goes back to the modular nature of the system as mentioned previously. If paired with a Garmin or other ANT+ compatible head unit, you will still have power data at your disposal and it is likely that those investing in this Left Hand Crank element of the system will only need the basics to start - the huge potential for data can be realised as you develop your training and upgrade the system.

As a stand alone unit paired with an ANT+ compatible head unit (a Garmin Edge for example) the rider will be presented with power data, if however the unit is partnered with Pioneer's own SGX-CA500 Computer then the rider will have not only power data but also a pedaling analysis in real time. Better still Pioneer have also developed their own Cyclo-Sphere software specifically for use with their power meters and which offers comprehensive data analysis including the first display of standing-pedaling and seated-pedaling. Pioneer also have an app for the iphone 6 and 6+ for immediate analysis of data.

So, when compared to a Stages for example, the Single  Pioneer has obvious long term benefits for the Shimano user looking to develop their Power System in parallel to the complexity of their training. The Pioneer Ultegra SGY-68 is water-resistance rated IPX6/IPX7 and capable of operation at temperatures from -10°C to 50°C, so is accurate and reliable even under the variety of environments faced during by even top athletes, indeed, the units have been thoroughly tested under the Giant-Alpecin and Lotto-Jumbo Pro Teams.

As previously stated, the huge benefit of the Pioneer system is the upgrade path. Users taking up this particular Left Hand Crank have the opportunity to send away the other half of their crank in order to have Pioneer's power pod added to their chainset for a complete Left-Right system (contact us for details) and then completing the system by pairing both with the SGX-CA500 head unit.

Ultimately, the Pioneer Ultegra SGY-68 Left Hand crank power meter is an excellent starting point for those wishing to develop their training with power. It is the sensible option should you wish to future proof your system with numerous upgrade paths that will allow you to tailor your power requirements to your training demands.
