SRAM Red eTAP HRD : Hydraulic Disc Wireless Upgrade Kit : POST MOUNT

Brand:SRAM

Code:SMER816400

The new SRAM Red e-Tap Wireless groupset is the logical next step in transmission development. Refined over 6 years and over a million km of testing, it is a simple, elegant advancement that will enhance your riding experience.

Now, the intuitive simplicity of SRAM RED eTap is available with the added performance of hydraulic road disc brakes (HRD). The SRAM RED® eTap® HRD shift-brake control offers the world’s first wireless drivetrain with their most advanced HRD platform yet, HydroHC™. Simpler shifting, better braking—all in the name of true advancement.

Designed to remove the clutter from your road bike without sacrificing the reliability of a wired system, the Sram Red eTap has come about thanks to advancements in wireless communication and SRAM's own in-house - highly secretive - communication protocols that they claim will be impossible to hack and that are not subject to interference. This will give riders peace-of-mind to ride in mass participation events and races, safe in the knowledge that someone else's shifting doesn't ruin your rhythm! Utilizing 128-bit encryption, eTap shift signals are transmitted and received in accordance with SRAM’s proprietary wireless protocol known as AIREA. Each time an eTap groupset is paired, a new encryption code is generated and assigned to the components in this group to ensure complete shifting security.

Like all electronic systems, the SRAM Red eTap Wireless components are powered by batteries. The difference with the eTap system is that each battery is housed in the component it powers rather than in a single battery commonly housed inside the frame or seatpost. Both the rear and front derailleurs use a dedicated eTap battery that plugs directly into the mechanism while the shifters - a simple switch - use CR2032 'watch' style batteries. The advantages this brings are numerous but the key benefits are the ease with which batteries can be interchanged (they are small enough to carry spares with you) and the off-bike charging. Back to that interchangeability: imagine you've forgotten to charge your batteries and you're out for a long ride, the rear mech suddenly stops shifting so now you're stuck in the wrong gear. No problem, given that there is likely to be more charge in the front battery (a result of fewer shifts) you simply whip out both batteries and swap them round. Voila! Extra juice for the rear mech again. Of course this hypothetical wouldn't ever happen because you're smart and carry a spare, charged battery with you - just in case!

The charging benefits are married to the improved overall aesthetic of your bike. Sram originally set out to create a simple, elegant solution to remove what was in the way, while offering an alternative to wired electronic shifting systems. There are literally no wires between the main components and the batteries, nothing to tuck inside the frame and - music to a mechanics ears - no convoluted installation and set up. Pairing each component is as simple as pressing a few buttons and watching some LED's flash - no really! Those LED's also indicate how much battery life is left in each component and is as simple as pressing a switch - so there really are no excuses for running out on the road.

Sram have always done things slightly differently - often having their hands forced, but with the Red eTap Wireless system and for the first time, they are pioneering an entirely new approach. Even shifting duties are altered. Traditional shifting has seen the right hand lever take care of the rear derailleur while the left controlled the front. Sram's wireless protocol has allowed for a change in this arena too. The rear derailleur is controlled by both left and right levers, one being responsible for the up-shift and the other for the down-shift. As the front derailleur is just a shift in one of only 2 positions and thanks to the beauty and simplicity of the design, shifting the front mech is a matter of switching it up or down using both levers simultaneously. Although it might sound odd, for those of us lucky enough to have used it already, we can confirm that it is very intuitive. The multi-shift is also present and like Shimano's Di2 and Campagnolo's EPS, is achieved by holding the lever.

In addition to the standard wireless elements, Sram have also created Blips - satellite shifters that are supplied in pairs. These are Climber's or Sprinter's Switches that connect directly to the main shifter and that can be positioned pretty much anywhere you like on the handlebar: tops for climbing, drops for sprinting or anywhere in between. Up to 2 pairs of Blips can be connected to the road groupset.

The electronic derailleurs remain a YAW system to allow for precise and simple shifting on existing mechanical set-ups. The upgrade kits will be limited globally and we don't expect to see a great volume of them in the first year but with that said we have a number available.
