Tacx Flux 2 Smart Direct Drive Trainer

Season:2021

Brand:Tacx

Code:T2980

The updated Tacx Flux - the Flux 2 - delivers some discreet but important upgrades to give more accurate and realistic ride feel and response, particularly for lower FTP athletes and those who like to climb!

One of the key changes in the Flux 2 is the dramatically reduced speed to maintain a 15% gradient - 10kph as opposed to the originals 50kph. This is significant when you understand that Zwift halves the trainer difficulty by default - when you see 8% you are actually riding 4% and Zwift slows your speed virtually. This inability to maintain high gradient at low speed is quite common in mid level Smart trainers, so the move by Tacx to improve this is significant. The original Flux could technically hold a 15% gradient but would have required the rider to sustain a speed of 50kph - which no one is doing! By bringing that range down to 10kph / 6mph is a huge swing and is a realistic value allowing you to get 100% trainer difficulty and therefore greater realism.

Much of the improved ride feel and responsiveness comes from an upgraded flywheel. With the simulated mass up from around 25kg to 32kg the Flux 2 delivers improved simulated road feel, this is in addition to a 500w bump in sprint suppport - now 2000w vs the Flux's 1500. These internal changes also improve the maximum simulatable gradient which has risen from 10 to 16%, bringing it closer still to the range topping Neo. Accuracy is improved too, from 5% to 2.5%.

Another significant change is that of the resistance floor which has been lowered significantly from the original. What does this mean? Well, previously, if you were a small rider or someone with a lower FTP and you wanted to do an interval session, there is a good chance you would have to find a gearing combination that allowed you to go to lower watts during the recovery phase of intervals. However this sometimes resulted in slower reaction times from the trainer - a double-edged sword.

Tacx have made external changes too. With many riders running longer cage derailleurs, Tacx have altered the design of the Flux 2 chassis to accommodate them, they also supply the common thru-axle adapters in the box rather than selling them separately

The rest remains largely unchanged. The Flux 2 is a fully interactive Smart trainer, that connects you to all your favourite apps. Hosting dual band ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth technology, it communicates with and can be controlled by any device of your choice. The responsive Smart electronics make sure that the smallest fluctuation in power settings is converted into an alteration in resistance, making sure that each watt is transferred accurately to your body.

Compatible software

Tacx Smart trainers use the ANT+ FE-C protocol for communication which allows them to be controlled by third-party software. The software receives the speed, cadence and power from the trainer and controls the brake. Click on more information for an explanation of the compatibility and functions of each software package.

  • G'Day, do I need to buy a Campy hub and cassette to use with my Campy equipped bike? If so do you sell please? Many thanks
Question asked by Ben on 16/02/2021 16:01:05
    Hi Ben,

There are a couple of answers to this question!

    1. If you are running 11 Speed then you can technically use a Shimano / Sram 11 Speed Cassette and the gearing should mesh (I've been swapping 11 Speed campag / Shimano rear wheels between rigs for years with no drama)

    2. If you're running 8/9/10 or 12 speed then you will need a Freehub body and compatible cassette : https://www.7hundred.co.uk/accessories/trainers-rollers/tacx-direct-drive-freehub-body-campagnolo-for-neo-2tflux-2tflux-s__58605

    Thanks
