Cycling bib shorts are an indispensable article of clothing for any bike ride. Q36.5 bibs - as you will know from my superlative-ridden write-ups - are an extremely high quality, superbly designed product, expertly constructed. They are essential for those cyclists who appreciate  streamlined clothing that delivers exceptional performance with a minimally invasive footprint. Features of every model in the Q36.5 range include high performance padded chamois, innovative lumbar support and an ergogenic fit for maximum comfort and efficient aerodynamics. The king of the range is the Dottore, as comfortable and feature & technology packed as they are versatile.

The King is dead (well, he's taken early retirement), long live the King : The Dottore X

My usual product write-ups can be a little tome-like so you'll be relieved that for the Dottore X, I shall keep it relatively short. This is largely because I have spent some time writing a more considered appraisal of the incredible new Dottore X bib shorts in the blog. You can read that (if you wish) here : The Perfect Bib Short

The Dottore X can - and should - be considered as an entirely new product. Not a refresh or update to the existing Dottore. This is because Q36.5 have spent considerable time and resource investigating and re-researching their patterns (fabric shapes and cuts), developing ergogenics (enhancing athletic performance) and studying Regional Sweat Rate Mapping. In addition, they have developed a new fabric that is 15% lighter while delivering improved graduated compression, thermal stability and remarkable durability of its forbear.

Ultimately, Q36.5 have reduced the bulk and weight of the Dottore while improving the hold despite a more 'free' feeling - something that will be welcome on those epic 4 hour+ days in the saddle. An improved C-Interface - the crotch area - has a forgiving Anti-stress cut and comfort is augmented by removing the central seam so common in other bib shorts and that often results in discomfort. In addition, like the Elite bibshort, the new Dottore X uses a Dyneema panel underneath to improve abrasion resistance and - more importantly - improve moisture management and temperature stability in this important area.

The bibs have been refined with the tubular construction now featuring an internal stitch to further improve comfort. An upper brace panel, constructed from the extremely soft material that Q36.5 use in the collar of the new Hybrid Que long sleeve jerseys, is mounted to stop the bibs rolling and bunching when you adopt a cycling position.

The Dottore X deliver on the thermal stability front as you would expect, thanks to the investment in the scientific approach and the use of proprietary materials. The lightweight polyamide construction is woven in unique panels to complement the body's natural sweat rates and is enhanced by the use of silver thread to maximise temperature stabilisation while being bacterio-static to improve hygeine. As with the Dottore, the use of various and varying densities of fabric in combination with a dedicated lumbar panel, deliver a considered level of muscular support in a progressive way that enhances your pedal stroke and offers graduated compression down the leg for an augmentation to blood flow.

For the Dottore X, Q36.5 also offer an option on length. There is a trend towards longer limb coverage for both aerodynamic gain and aesthetics as well as a need for those with longer backs and femurs to have a better fitting short. The Dottore X Long offers a 2cm longer leg and a 1.5cm longer bib.

The Dottore X is the ultimate versatile bib short thanks to the developments Q36.5 have made as well as the continued employment of the incredibly comfortable Fusion chamois. The Fusion pad helps deliver the signature comfort and mobility of the Dottore X in any riding scenario : all-day, any-ride.

Size Guide

We recommend purchasing and wearing your Q36.5 garment ‘true to size’ - if you are usually a Medium, purchase a Medium!

Please be aware that certain products, such as the Dottore X bibshort and L1 Pinstripe X jersey are available in LONG versions. For the Bibshorts, this is a 2cm increase in leg length and a 1-1.5cm increase in bib strap length. For the jerseys, this is an increase in length of the torso by 2cm - to better accommodate taller riders and those with relatively long torsos.

Exceptions to this are rare but recent style and cut changes to the patterned jerseys in the Q36.5 range have yielded some minor size changes. The original patterned R1 jerseys (eg Vaccaboia) that featured a Raglan sleeve cut, have now evolved into the G1 that features a new anatomical pre-shaped sleeve design for superior ergonomics. While the fit overall is improved, these G1 jerseys I find to be slightly shorter and a smidge tighter. If you are between sizes or already borderline on a size (close to it being too small), you may wish to size up one. Similarly, if you are not quite 'racing snake' and the size chart suggests you are a particular size - if you are close to the upper most extreme of that measure - you may wish to size up (it's how it works for me!)

The new R2 Jersey range is marginally more accommodating than the G1 but in most cases not enough to warrant a change in size - we recommend sticking to your 'normal' jersey sizing.

When trying on a Q36.5 garment for the first time please keep in mind that cut and fit is designed for on the bike comfort and performance and the user may feel a very minor degree of strain (eg. in the shoulder and chest area of the jersey or the bib short braces) when standing upright. When on the bicycle in a riding position this feeling will literally disappear and be replaced by excellent ease of movement, comfort and stability.

Please Note: Many men's garments are also suitable for women. Q36.5 produce an XXS and XS in many Men's pieces aimed specifically at female riders.

Buyers Guide

C-Interface

One of the unique features of the Dottore X

Q36.5 have created a new proprietary pattern for the crotch area, aimed at improving the interface between saddle and chamois. There are no more central seams that normally create pressure and discomfort while on the saddle. Q36.5 have added Dyneema(R), a very conductive yarn, for better thermoregulation in this area which tends to heat up during the ride.

Fusion Chamois

The art of the bib short

The fusion technology for the chamois padding allows the chamois to be both sewn and thermo-moulded to create a single insert. High density, strategically placed breathable foam has been designed to eliminate the friction points which that have been pinpointed through ergonomic studies focused on the contact areas on saddles.

Bib Straps

A truly unique construction

A new, minimal tubular strap construction makes these the most breathable straps with a quick drying time and an increased level of comfort thanks to the sartorial reverse tubular construction that hides the seams on the inside so they never come in contact with your skin. Extremely light and causing no pressure, these straps create a frame that keeps the bib short in position when you are riding.

Gradual Compression

Increasing the venous return

A jacquard woven „y-pattern“ serves not only aerodynamic purposes but also offers graduated compression. Four shifting levels of density correspond to the four different levels of graduated compression. From greatest compression at the bottom of the shorts (where the fabric is now left unhemmed with an integrated gripper) to least compression at the top, this combination encourages increased and better circulation.

Lumbar Support

Another important key component

The rear lumbar panel is made from a proprietary fabric that has the greatest woven density (Modulus Force warp 510, weft 620) of any panel in the bib short, its visible ribbing operates as an architectural intervention providing even greater structure to the fabric’s body. This extreme compressiveness creates a zone of support for the lumbar and gluteus musculature, providing the rider with improved stability, orientation, balance and proprioceptivity in this critical zone in which all the principal muscles used in the pedalling action are connected.
