Mavic Ksyrium SLR (Clincher)

Season:2014

Brand:Mavic

Code:3265

The hugely popular Mavic Ksyrium SLR is improved for the 2013 season. It is the lightest Ksyrium ever at 1410g for the pair (1950g with the tyre and tube system) and sees an improved Exalith rim surface and newly designed brake pad for this year.

The improved braking surface and brake pad compund help eliminate the squealing experienced by some users as the rim surface 'rubbers in'. In addition the Mavic Yksion Powerlink and Griplink tyres have undergone a facelift for 2013 and the addition of grooves to the tyres makes them better stoppers in the wet. The Griplink compound used in 2012 now becomes the Powerlink compound, with an entirely new and very sticky rubber compound is used for this years Griplink. The tyres also have a narrower profile and have had the excess fat trimmed from them in order to save weight.

We would buy the Ksyrium SLR purely for their aesthetic value if nothing else; that 'Exalith' rim looks absolutely fantastic, stealth doesn't quite describe just how black the coating is. The actual name for the coating is 'Keronite' and was developed during the 1960s space programme in order to produce lightweight, corrosion resistant and strong parts. Keronite is not dissimilar to anodized coating, however it is not deposited onto the rim, rather it is grown from the respective metal (here Mavic use aluminium). To use the scientific parlance it is a 'plasma electrolytic oxidation' and to you and I means that a very hard and very dense ceramic coating of about ten microns thick is stuck fast on the rim. It is for all intents and purposes about four times harder than anodized coatings and about seven times as wear resistant. As such as we've stated; when you receive the wheels the coating is incredibly stealthy, so black that it sucks in all surrounding light which looks amazing, not least with the superb Yksion tyres that Mavic provide. There is a specific set of brake pads that comes with the wheels, produced by Swisstop these are essentially the same compound as the aforementioned company's Green compound, but with Mavic's proprietary cut pattern to minimise squeal. The first set of these will wear down very quickly, until a deposit is left on the rim. However we must say that the braking on these rims is impressively good, they make a fantastic buzz too if that is going to swing it!

The spokes are similar to those found on the Ksyrium SLS; very broad, bladed 'Zicral' spokes on the front wheel which contributes to an exceptionally rigid and inspiring ride with a little more lateral impact resistance than their R-Sys brethren. The 2013 Ksyrium SLR not only feature the distinctive machining between the spokes on the rim bridge but also on the sidewalls - a process referred to by Mavic as ISM3D - which further removes excess material to reduce weight. On the rear wheel the spokes and hub are identical to those of the R-Sys SLR; carbon Tracomp spokes on the non-drive side and aluminium on the drive. The Tracomp spokes are interesting in that they work in both compression and tension so provide superb responsiveness when climbing or sprinting, not to mention the natural propensity of carbon to be comfortable.

The hubs both use the QRM+ bearings for a buttery smooth ride and are double sealed for longevity. The front hub uses a carbon shell as you would expect from such a lightweight wheel.

These wheels come with tools, wheel bags, brake pads, tyres and tubes.
