Swift Ultravox RS-1 Frame

Season:2012

Brand:Swift

Code:SCUVFS12

Swift is a new South African company set up by Mark Blewett, an ex-pro cyclist who was competing at the highest level in the 90's, his hands-on approach to development is evident from his day to day interaction with engineers, designers and athletes. Swift are very keen to bring cutting edge carbon materials, technology and processes to the market without the often mind-blowing price tags and a perfect example of this is the Swift Glide Tech molding process. Like the Pinarello Dogma 2, Swift don't rely on an inflated bladder to form the mold around which the carbon is laid up and as a result the inside of each Swift frame is as smooth on the inside as it is on the outside - fewer wrinkles in the carbon means there is less risk of stress faults developing. Each frame undergoes an endoscopic examination after production to ensure a perfect finish - excellent attention to detail that you should know about as it's not something you're likely to see!

Like most high-end manufacturers worth their salt, Swift use a blend of Torayca (T) and Mitsubishi Rayon (MR) carbon fibres . At Torayca the 'T' number refers to the stiffness to weight ratio of the carbon; the higher the number the higher the stiffness. The Pinarello Dogma 2 uses a T800 fibre through its flowing curves, as does the Giant TCR Advanced SL.

The Swift Ultravox uses a mixture of T800 and T1000 fibres, a higher modulus than both the frames mentioned above. T1000 fibre is incredibly stiff, so stiff in fact that to make a bike from this would be asking for a failure, purely because the stiffness is so high that the frame would not have the compliance to cope with impact. This is why Swift incorporate the two fibres; the T800 gives the frame the compliance in the places where it needs to flex and the T1000 makes for efficient power transfer and saves weight. These fibres are toughened further with a process developed by Swift of modifying the epoxy resin to increase the strength of the carbon into which it is injected. It offers an incredible 136% improvement on breakage point over an unmodified resin.

The rear end of the Ultravox is made up of deep and broad chain stays and a pair of very fine seat stays. These seat stays contribute massively to the vertical compliance in much the same way as the similar system does for the Cannondale SuperSix EVO; offering a smooth ride without having to integrate the elaborate swooping curves seen in other frames. The chain stays provide the exceptional power transfer that you would expect from such a frame. The rest of the frame is similarly designed for performance and the most notable feature is it's asymmetry which is clearly evident at the bottom bracket interface. This asymmetry gives a balance of power transfer that is unmatched by conventional designs giving the rider smooth acceleration and a very 'planted' feel. The slightly squared downtube carbon shelled BB30 bottom bracket are both designed to be exceptionally laterally stiff whilst the broad headtube grants all the rigidity to the front end you could possibly want. It is these key features that give the frame it's impressive numbers: the Swift Ultravox frame is 100g lighter than a Pinarello Dogma (also asymmetric) and is a huge 20% stiffer than a Specialized SL4.

From a geometric perspective the frame is as you would expect for a race bike; a low headtube and tight rear end. The most obvios visual difference from comparable frames is the angle of the headtube. Swift have slackened the front end and say that this is to cope with the growing availability and use of very light wheels, which in many frames can give a rather flightly ride. The idea here is to eliminate the twitchiness that can result and stabilse the ride to give great handling.

Overall then the Ultravox is a super-stiff race bike that is very easy to ride given the geometry. It is a bit different from the majority of bikes out there and we appreciate the bravery to it takes to stand out. Not least because it works.

Given the healthy statistics, market leading technologies, and impressive ride quality - all at a half the price you would expect to pay for similarly designed framesets we think the Swift Ultravox will be highly saught after.
