Enve SES 2.2 Carbon CLINCHER Wheels : New Brake Track : Chris King Hub

Season:2016

Brand:Enve

Code:EN0025

The ENVE SMART project was born out of a desire to produce the best wheels possible with clear performance goals in mind: namely high stiffness-to-weight, aerodynamic stability, strength and minimal aerodynamic drag in operation. The result is the ENVE SMART SES series of wheels.

The new Enve 2.2 SES wheelset is designed as the ultimate in climbing wheels but with Enve's market leading strength and durability - even at this incredible low weight - there is nothing to stop you using them all year round. The new textured brake track takes care of braking duties with aplomb in all conditions.

With their unique approach to both research & development and manufacture Enve have raised the bar, creating wheels that are unique and offer a real performance advantage. Designed and manufactured in-house in Ogden, Utah the production is controlled such that you get the best results possible. ENVE's market leading strength-to-weight ratio is borne from their use of a process called CFD or Continuous Fibre Design. This process is unique in Carbon rim design as it eliminates breaks in the lay-up of the fibre which conveys the highest possible strength. This ENVE patented process of moulding the spoke hole, valve hole and spoke beds also allows wheels to be built with both higher and more even spoke tension giving greater acceleration and a stiffer wheel overall. However it is not the build quality alone that sets these wheels apart rather it is this in combination with innovative and distinct design.

The new 2.2 SES Rims from Enve continue the SMART system development into the lightweight, climbing end of the market, previously inhabited by the Classic 25.

The Enve 2.2 is an SES featured rim for climbing and is aimed at climbing specialists seeking a wheelset that inspires confidence regardless of terrain or weather conditions and that delivers every advantage when riding through mountainous terrain and the unpredictable micro-climatic conditions that such terrain so often throws at you.

The new 2.2 was the first wheel in the range to benefit from enhanced stopping power. The culmination of over a decade of development, Enve's new Molded In brake track offers the rider even greater confidence when breaking. Often the Achiles Heel of carbon wheels, confident braking, both in the wet and for prolonged periods, has been slowly improving in recent years with surfaces becoming more resiliant and better able to dissipate heat. The new brake track (NBT) from Enve is a giant step forward in carbon braking efficiancy - in all conditions.

Enve employ a 100% unidirectional brake track in conjunction with a high-temperature resin system that allows the rim to better manage heat for more consistent braking - meaning less likely rim deformation on those long alpine descents. The new brake track is also roughly textured and this goes a very long way to assisting with stopping. Enve claim you now require 30% less lever force for the same effective stopping power as their previous and relatively good, brake surface. As if that weren't enough, they also claim near identical stopping in the wet as in the dry - and that is a big deal. Having ridden the new brake track I can attest to its efficacy, it is easily on par with some of the best aluminium surfaces I have ridden - certainly in the dry - and there is also the satisfying high frequency buzz of the pad against the rim as you slow - not dissimilar to that of Mavic's Exalith surface, but without the squeal!

The 2.2 SES tubeless clincher wheels are built around Chris King's legendary R45 Road hubs - one of the finest road hubs currently available - with incredible precision and response and with mind bending attention to engineering detail. Maintained regularly they will last a lifetime and deliver that satisfying and unique Chris King Buzz whenever you freewheel.

It is important to note that Enve also pitch the 3.4 as a climbing wheel. The decision you make as to which is right for you will come down largely to your weight and the type of rider you are. If you are heavier and tend to 'mash' the pedals (think Sprinter in the Pyrenees) then you will likely benefit from the additional stiffness offered by the 3.4. On the other hand, if you are sub 70kg with galling souplesse and you basically refuse to ride unless there's at least 1000m of ascent, these should be on your short list!

Aesthetically, there is nothing bad to say. These are pretty. Period.
