Giant TCR Advanced SL 3

Season:2012

Brand:Giant

Code:840780

The Giant TCR Advanced SL 3 takes it's build fundamentals from it's elder statesman - the Advanced SL 0, but rather than an ISP (Integrated Seat Post) it uses a standard clamp system. This makes the bike slightly more versatile and a touch more comfortable. A race bike, without doubt.

Giant is an interesting brand; customers will often overlook them until gently guided towards them in preference for what they perceive as more ‘prestigious’ brands such as Pinarello. It is often with shock that they receive the news that Giant is the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world, manufacturing not only their own frames but also frames for many of the other big names. As a company they turn over a colossal amount of money and it is for this reason that we often suggest that all our customers consider them if value and performance are important to them.

The 2011 Giant TCR Advanced SL was a hard act to beat. The compact geometry seemed to fit everyone and for all intents and purposes it was still far ahead of most other bicycle manufacturers when it made its swansong in September, superseded by this; the newer 2012 version. Both framesets use the same carbon fibre; a Torayca T800 for exceptional stiffness to weight numbers but with just enough flex for the frame to be firstly reasonably smooth and secondly durable upon impact, the new Advanced SL in fact utilizes carbon nanotube technology which further improves the impact resistance by 14%.

The TCR Advanced SL 2011 was widely regarded to be one of the stiffest race bikes money could buy and as such the new version is all about saving weight. The full carbon bottom bracket shell yields a 15 gram weight saving whilst the use of longer, continuous fibres saves a further 100 grams worth of material. In frame that already weighed just a little over 900g (with an integrated seatpost) this is a weight saving of over 10% whilst a 1.25” upper headset bearing has made the front end a massive 40% stiffer.

All this makes a bike that is nothing short of explosive, the compact geometry handles like it is on rails and will leap forward at the slightest inclination. This thing will climb like a mountain goat, descend outstandingly and eat up miles with an insatiable hunger. The geometry is pure stage racing; aggressive, yes, but not so pointed and harsh that you are left wishing you hadn’t gone so far. You simply feel quick, be it mile 5, 50 or 150, you will find yourself looking at the computer at 80 miles and thinking that maybe it’s not beyond the call of duty to push some mammoth average speeds for the full century.

To further the ergonomics the bike uses Giant’s new ‘Ride Sense’ system which means that wireless speed and cadence is possible without the use of the computer-specific sensors. Rather Giant’s ANT+ compatible system will do it all, discretely integrated into the frame the system merely requires an ANT+ compatible head unit.

This model is built with Giant's own DT Swiss designed P SL0 wheel system and Shimano's Ultegra groupset for impeccable shifting and longevity, at the same time keeping the price down. If you are considering upgrading your old aluminium machine and getting into racing then this should be on your list.
