Koo ORION Cycling Sunglasses : White / Black - Milky Gold

Season:2019

Brand:KOO

Code:OEY00001.626.

KOO is the independant eyewear brand of Italian helmet manufacturer, Kask. Koo's genesis in 2017 came with a single offering in the shape of the OPEN, a full frame sunglass that featured an innovative arm folding system and optically precise lenses from German market leader Carl Zeiss. The subsequent season saw the introduction of a half-frame version - the OPEN3 or OPEN CUBE. It is fair to say that they became immediately popular with staff and customers alike at 700 and the brand have out-sold Oakley for the past 2 seasons. For 2019, KOO introduce the new ORION.

The ORION is the first binocular (2 independent lenses) open frame. The binocular construction has it's own unique benefits and has taken KOO a while to bring to market for one simple reason: they will only produce a product once they are convinced that every element of that product is perfect. I first saw a sample of the Orion back in October 2017 and it is fair to say that they have come a long way from that already excellent design. Binocular glasses allow for a greater lens curvature while maintaining optimal optical clarity. This extra curve lends greater eye protection while simulataneously offering enhanced visibility. In addition they are also RX compatible - that is, you can use prescription lenses in the frames - something that the myopic amongst us will no doubt make good use of and the Orion fills the gap in the range for the Italian brand.

The Koo Orion, aside from being a half-frame and thus more ventilated by design, feature Active Anti-Fog Ventilation in the form of 2 adjustable 'sliders' in the frame, above lens. These two colour injected, durable polycarbonate sliders open or cover two cuts in the lens. In the open position, the vent engages the airflow between frame and lenses and thus keeps the rider’s view crystal clear when fogging would usually be a problem. It is particularly useful when climbing for example. As the airflow over the glasses reduces, the liklihood of fogging increases so by opening the sliders, the rider can increase airflow while maintaining eye coverage. Just as importantly, the 2 vent covers create a unique design aesthetic and it gives space to create distinctive colour combinations. The added ventilation certainly keeps the glasses from fogging up, yet it in no way disturbs the eye at high speeds - something that some have experienced with other glasses in the past.

Like the OPEN and OPEN3, the ORION is 100% manufactured in Italy - something KOO and Kask are extremely proud of and a facet of development that allows the company to adapt and refine design swiftly, while maintaining extremely high build quality and consistency.

The KOO ORION sunglasses are designed to integrate perfectly with Kask helmets but - thanks to well thought out design and with the use of a helmet in mind - they fit beautifully with all the helmets we've tried. The Orion features adjustable arm length to ensure not only a perfect fit for every user but perfect integration into the helmet. The arms feature a completely hidden mechanism that offers 15mm of arm length adjustment in 3, 5mm increments. This is a solution that stops the dreaded helmet retention system interferance with sunglass fit, allowing you to buy with confidence.

The nose pads of the Orion continue the design introduced in the OPEN and swivel to allow a more cusomized fit on the face. The Koo ORION has replacable lenses and features a two-step mechanism to change the lenses quickly, yet securely. Opening the nosepiece disengages the lenses that are also locked onto the frame. This way, they won’t just fall off with the nosepiece opened and simple deformation of the frame pops the lens from the housing at the temples and around the bridge.

KOO have not compromised in the construction of the ORION glasses and this is immediately evident in the hand, from the action of the quality pivots and the simple lens replacement mechanism. The lenses themselves are made by renowned manufacturer Carl Zeiss whose quality is a benchmark in the optic industry. The lenses are sourced from the Zeiss Sun lens range and offer the highest optical acuity available. The KOO ORION features a range of lenses suitable for various terrains and light conditions - the Red Mirror is ideal for off-road while the Infrared, with its multi-layer tinting, is perfect for the road. Despite their variances they do all share a common features : All offer 100% protection against UV rays, are suitable for driving and feature an Anti-Scratch technology, making the lenses super durable. In addition, all ORION lenses have Zeiss's anti-reflective technology that greatly improves the efficiency of the lenses. The coating eliminates reflections from both the internal and external surfaces of the lenses meaning your eyes receive the most light possible, improving contrast and definition and reducing eye strain.

As mentioned. the lenses come in various filters for a differing conditions and applications with Infrared designed specifically for road (not unlike the Oakley Prizm system), and the Red Mirror better suited to Off-Road.

The KOO ORION are available in 2 sizes : Small and Medium - though for most, even those of us with little heads (56cm or so), the Medium gives great vision and wrapped-fit. All come supplied with a soft and hard case. As you might expect from the Kask fold, the ORION are available in myriad colourways to match your helmet, or your socks, eyes, water bottle.......

Available in 2 sizes : Small and Medium. We find that for most (head sizes down to around 56cm), the Medium sits well and offers excellent coverage without appearing overly big.

Where possible, we always recommend trying on cycling eyewear contextually - in other words, stick a helmet on when you do!
