Kask UTOPIA Aero Road Cycling Helmet : Light Blue

Season:2020

Brand:Kask

Code:CHE00056.301.

Meeting the demands of Pro teams is one of the ways to drive product design and development. When that team is Team SKY, the demands are often acute.

Over the last 2 years, Kask - at the request of Sky and in the never ending quest for marginal gains - have been devloping the most aerodynamic road cycling helmet on the market. After 10 years working with Sky, Kask understand what drives the team and the expectation levied by the most successful pro cycling outfit in the modern era. This strict focus on performance is something that even us humble roadies can benefit from.

Foremost in Kask's mind is always safety - it is something that their company is built upon (they create some of the finest head protection in the Snow-sports, Equestrian and Construction arenas - not just cycling) and the Utopia is no exception. Kask never compromise on safety in the quest for lower weight or greater performance, their success in the cycling market is made all the more impressive in this regard, as they continue to deliver some of the lightest, most comfortable and safest helmets available.

The remit when deveolping the Utopia, was to create the fastest aero road helmet possible. To this end, Kask undertook extensive Wind-Tunnel tests, at multiple yaw angles, of nearly all of the current aerodynamic road bike helmets available in order to establish their baseline - and then they set out to not only better the aerodynamics, but the complete helmet package. They succeeded too. The Utopia boasts some impressive data across the boad, delivering a measured and tested saving of 2 watts over the previous market leader, the Specialized Evade. The Utopia owes much of this advantage to innovative NACA ducts that are integrated into the frame of the helmet. In the main, these ducts help to reduce the overall size of the helmet making it more compact and presenting less helmet to the wind. Furthermore, the positioning of the vents within the frame of the helmet, dramatically reduces turbulence over the surface.

The NACA ducts also drastically improve another important aspect of the Utopia and one that is often in conflict with the aim of improving aerodynamics : ventilation. The ducts channel airflow directly into the helmet rather than a good proportion skirting over the surface and eddying away from the head. The result is a marked gain in cooling, which when working hard on solo breakaways or in mid to long distance triathlon events, is of real importance: a good proportion of your energy can be required to help cool the body in cases where a rider is working at high outputs, resulting in a drop in performance; so any improvement in this area can be of great benefit.

To put it in perspective, the Utopia is almost as aerodynamic as Kask's Bambino Pro Time Trial / Triathlon helmet made famous by Team Sky, but - despite fewer vents - has significantly better cooling than the company's hugely popular Protone road helmet. In addition to the aerodynamics and venting, the Utopia is also both light weight and comfortable. Kask have sacrificed nothing in the usability of the the Utopia in the quest for enhanced performance. The Utopia has a claimed weight of 235g for a medium - this is significantly lighter than the Evade (287g / M) and is the same weight as the new Evade II but in a Small. As such it is not only the fastest aero road helmet available, it is also exceptionally light while maintaining incredbly high safety standards.

Fitting is a hallmark of Kask helmets and has been since their inception. Indeed, the Up-Down fitting system rapidly set the brand apart when it came to ease of fit and comfort. The trend continues with the Utopia which employs the same excellent Octo-Fit system used on the Protone. The floating cradle design is able to oscillate freely through 180° allowing perfect fit on any head shape and the internal gel pads attached to the contact points offer supreme comfort. The Skeletal Brackets of the cradle have been refined and provide the optimum support whilst being as light as possible. The vertical movement of the cradle ultimatey allows perfect positioning of the retention system around the back and lower part of the skull - regardless of head charateristics - that often create ares of discomfort with other helmet brands. Tightening / loosening is achieved through the now familiar Micro-Dial that is rubberised for improved finger grip.

The Kask Utopia is a versatile helmet. While it has been developed for Team Sky for Road races - and it has already proven itself in one of the finest individual displays in modern cycling history, under Chris Froome in the 2018 Giro d'Italia - the Utopia is also more than at home in Triathlon and Time Trial events. Indeed, it has been used at Iron Man Kona by Kask athletes who have the choice of the TT helmet crop. While helmet choice for events is a personal one, the Utopia is more than capable of offering a significant advantage to athletes and riders. As an example, you may wish to use the Utopia rather than the Bambino if you run hot or are riding in high temperature conditions. In such cases, the better venting offered by the Utopia may yield greater overall performance than the slim advantages in aerodynamics alone offered by the Bambino Pro. Equally, the decision to by a Utopia may be a simply financial one - it is often an expensive business to own both a road and a TT helmet. The Utopia helps to ease the decision if you are in two minds about a Bambino Pro for example. If you have great form and are able to keep your head still throughout your events - you might still benefit from that Mistral though!

Fast. Light. Comfortable. Safe and Fast..... did I say that already? Available in 3 sizes to fit most heads.

KASK WG11 ROTATIONAL IMPACT TEST

WG11 is a rigorous protocol for helmet testing specifically targeted at measuring the impact of rotational forces on a headform during a crash. This is the methodology adopted by Kask for their helmet testing and the Impact conditions are based on real accident data. This approach yields properly informative data that guides construction.

Most of the tests on helmets that use rotational impact prevention technologies (like MIPS) are carried out using headforms whose coefficient of friction is much higher than those of a human skull and therefore do not reflect reality.

The "pass-fail" criterion is based on the BrIC value, an algorithm that defines the level of brain injury. This value must be less than 0.68.

The final test protocol is:

OBLIQUE IMPACT TEST
Oblique tests @ 45°, impact speed 6 m/s, BrIC < 0.68
+ grade 80 closed-coat aluminum oxide abrasive paper
+ headform nominal coefficient of friction 0.3
+ wireless system: triaxial accelerometer + n. 3 ARS
Headform: EN960 series

Measurements:
Peak of rotational acceleration, Peak of linear acceleration, HIC, BRIC (< 0.68)

ALL Kask helmets successfully pass this test, with values that are never above a BrIC 0.390
