Wahoo Speedplay ZERO Dual-Sided Road Pedals

Season:2024

Brand:Speedplay

Code:WFPRZ1S53

Back in 2020, in the midst of the hugely distracting Covid saga, Wahoo quietly went about acquiring Speedplay - the ingenious pedal brand that revolutionised the road pedal market 31 years ago.

The immediate reasoning seems obvious. There is no Speedplay Pedal-based power meter currently available and since Garmin have Shimano and Look Keo locked-up with their Vector / Rally platform, it was a serious coup for Wahoo, their fiercest rival, to acquire Speedplay with the aim of filling that gap.

We are big Speedplay fans at 700. I have used them for over 20 years. They are hugely advantageous pedals for any rider but particularly if you have fussy feet or suffer from leg / hip / knee injury - as I do. My left leg might as well be made up of the parts from 3 different people, such are the number of injuries it has suffered.

The benefits of Speedplay (and the reason that their creator patented the designs all those years ago) are numerous. Aside from the obvious fact that they are the only Dual-sided Road clip-in pedal available (because of those patents), they are also the only system that allows riders to control 3 planes of adjustment (fore-aft, lateral and rotational) without any of those single adjustments interfering with the others. The same cannot be said of any of the other road pedals on the market - limited as they are by their 3-bolt cleat design.
On top of that, float is non-self centering - ie not fixed to 50% of the stated float rotation in either direction, from the centre-line of the cleat. This allows riders the freedom to accommodate extremes of toe-in or toe-out foot position as dictated by their physiology or by injury - by effectively deciding where the 0-15o of float available to them, begins.
Awesome right? Yes - but it doesn’t end there either. The form factor of the pedal also adds rider benefit and the migration of the spring mechanism into the cleat, rather than in the body of the pedal, facilitates this form. The recognisable circular body of a Speedplay pedal is extremely low profile, allowing for increased cornering angles before the pedal fouls the tarmac (we’ve all been there). As such, riders can continue to pedal through corners when others can’t - giving a distinct advantage in power delivery, and an edge over their rivals.

The Speedplay pedal system has been around in a relatively unchanged guise for its lifespan of over 30 years - save for minor adjustments to cleats in more recent years. That has just changed with their envelopment into the Wahoo family.
While the fundamentals that make the pedals so good remain, Wahoo have refined not only the pedals but have simplified the range and redesigned the bodies to bring them up to date aesthetically and to deliver the benefits in all the models (not always the case historically). This development makes it easier to understand the range while offering entry points for all consumers - from first time clip-in users to seasoned pro road riders and Triathletes. Adjustable float is now standard - even on the entry pedals - and all offer between 0 and 15o of micro-adjustable float. Triple sealed bearings make for minimal maintenance and combined with the revised bodies, increase the durability of an already robust platform. All models are now mounted using an allen key too. Further to this, the stack height - already low - has been reduced further.

In addition, Wahoo have created 2 cleat systems, both of which remain ‘walkable' - Standard Tension with aero and Easy Tension - both are compatible with all pedals.

The new Wahoo Speedplay range now consists of just 4 models (with a 5th Power System on the horizon) : COMP, ZERO, AERO and NANO.
All are engineered with a carbon composite body and are designed to 'account for everything' as their marketing blurb states - which we take to mean all those things mentioned above as well as aerodynamics (AERO) and low weight (NANO) and optimise performance through superior adjustability and better power transfer.

The versatile SPEEDPLAY COMP effectively replaces the Zero CroMo and features the chromoly spindle of its forbear. It is the only pedal in the range that is supplied with an EASY Tension cleat - and this makes sense. If this is your first foray into the clipless pedal market (don’t let that moniker fool you - clipless refers to the switch from old fashioned clips and straps to a system of direct engagement) then you might reasonably want a light-action spring in your cleat to allow for easier entry and exit from the pedal.

The ZERO is a race-ready platform built around a Stainless Steel spindle and offers optimal power transfer in a durable pedal design. Supplied with the Standard Tension cleat it accommodates more powerful riders and the cleat also adds enhanced aerodynamics within the cleat surround.

The AERO - unsurprisingly - is an aerodynamic spin on the ZERO. The Pedal removes one side of engagement in favour of an integrated aerodynamic design and will be favoured by testers (TT riders) and Triathletes - or those looking for every advantage in their road races. It weighs just 2 g more than the ZERO.

For those looking for every weight shedding advantage, the NANO is for you. Designed for Race days, the featherweight SPEEDPLAY NANO uses a Titanium spindle to tip the scales at a healthy 168g per pair - some 54g lighter than the ZERO and 64g lighter than the COMP.

Many long time users might be concerned about the relatively small range - after all the previous incarnation of Speedplay allowed riders to rebuild and customise their pedals with parts kits and various spindle length options. Fret not, Wahoo are committed to the platform (they have already mooted a Powerlink Zero Dual-Sided power meter pedal as suspected) and will offer ZERO users 4 lengths of spindle going forward. The more robust construction and improved bearings will help mitigate against servicing.

Ultimately, if you are deciding which system to use for your clipless journey, there is little need to look further than Speedplay (save for price), They are the only system that offers dual sided entry and a raft of adjustability that not only yields performance benefits, but that deliver these while helping minimise the risk of injury courtesy of their unparalleled adjustability.

    DUAL-SIDED ENTRY
SPEEDPLAY ZERO pedals' symmetrical form factor allows for dual sided entry when clipping in. No more fumbling, fussing or kicking your pedal over; take off when the light turns green and clip in with ease.

    ENHANCED WALKABILITY
The slim profile cleat and rubber texture create enhanced stability when walking in your road shoes off the bike.

    INTEGRATED PROFILE
SPEEDPLAY ZERO and Standard Tension Cleat create a seamless integration for a streamlined profile. The secure connection can contribute to an increase in the transfer of power, which can make it easier to attain those hard fought watts.

    UNBEATABLE STACK HEIGHT
Best-in-class stack height of the SPEEDPLAY pedal decreases the amount of material between your shoe and spindle. This provides a solid connection for a more fluid transfer of power with every pedal stroke.

    3-AXIS CLEAT ADJUSTABILITY
The Standard Tension Cleat can be positioned on the bottom of the shoe and adjusted fore-aft, left-right and rotationally, allowing between 0-15 degrees of float.

    OPTIMIZED BIOMECHANICS
The 3-axis adjustability and slim stack height of the SPEEDPLAY Advanced Pedal System allows the rider to customize their fit on the bike with the largest range of optionality. The lower stack height can allow for increased power transfer and a decreased saddle height, which results in reduced drag.

    ROTATIONAL FREE FLOAT
SPEEDPLAY pedals allow up to 15 degrees of float, allowing the heel to pivot around the center of the pedal. This range of motion in the foot, lower leg and knee increases comfort and enhances pedal efficiency.

    SUPERIOR CORNERING CLEARANCE
The slim profile of the SPEEDPLAY Advanced Pedal System allows for the greatest degree of lean on the bike when riding tight corners. Pedal with confidence knowing your pedal won't strike the ground, and leave the competition in the dust.

    STANDARD TENSION CLEAT INCLUDED
SPEEDPLAY ZERO pedals include a set of Standard Tension Cleats and cleat surrounds for the most aerodynamic profile & walkable system.

    EASY TENSION CLEAT COMPATIBLE
SPEEDPLAY Advanced Pedal System has cross cleat compatibility. Purchase the Easy Tension cleat, sold separately, for less resistance when unclipping.
