Fabric ALM Halo Saddle in White

Season:2027

Brand:Fabric

Code:407301012107

The original ALM was developed with Airbus in 2014, and Project:HALO was developed with the National Composites Centre, with prototype testing Fabric describe as derived from Formula 1 practice. Hugely popular in it's first iteration there were some issues - namely the sharp edges wearing bib-shorts more rapidly and the occasional nose failure.

The latest iteration resolves those key complaints through careful shaping in the first instance and a completely new, continuous fibre design and broader rail arcs in the second. What set that first saddle apart from the rest, remains true.

Almost every saddle you have ever owned is an assembly. A shell, a pair of rails, and some method of fixing one to the other, which means the join is both the heaviest part and the part that decides how the whole thing behaves, whether it creaks, how fast it wears and what comfort or performance it conveys.

The Fabric ALM Halo does away with those joins.
The base, the rails and the wrap-around rear section Fabric call the HALO, are moulded as one piece of carbon, with the rear supports of the two rails formed together into a continuous structure. The result is a suspended leaf spring, and the phrase is a fair one. The shell is supported at the rails and free to deflect vertically between them, while the tied rear stops the wings twisting as it does so. Fabric curve those wings downward specifically to remove the flex associated with conventional designs, and their tagline for the whole thing is "Stiff where you need it. Flex where you want it" - which deftly describes what the structure is actually doing.

The payoff is 150g, which is a hundred grams under the lightest saddle in the Scoop range.

Both Halo models are 142mm wide and feature a shallow-based profile, and the one most riders are likely to fit and benefit from.

On top there is a lightweight EVA topper under a microfibre cover, continuous and unbroken. No cut-out, which is deliberate: Fabric's argument is that if the base is flexing where your sit bones are, you do not need a hole where everything else is. Many riders will find that true and some will not, which is what the Halo Ergo is for. The continuous cover also keeps road spray off the underside of you, and if you have ever ridden a cut-out saddle through a British February you will know why that gets a mention.

The rails are 7x10mm carbon and as the lightest and the stiffest of their four rail materials, slightly stiffer than CroMo, it is aimed at shorter, power-focused efforts rather than at all-day comfort - the compliance in this saddle is coming from the base and not from the rails. There is a 100kg rider limit and the clamp torque is 8Nm, which on carbon rails is a figure to set with a torque wrench rather than a confident wrist.
