2025 Castelli Perfetto RoS 3 AirCore Jacket : Rich Red/Black Reflex

Season:2025

Brand:Castelli

Code:CS25556RichREDBLKReflex

Castelli has teamed up with technical fabric pioneers Polartec® to introduce AirCore™ – a groundbreaking new fabric developed exclusively for cycling. Designed to deliver the perfect balance of breathability, weather protection and comfort, AirCore™ is built for real-world winter riding. Say goodbye to boil-in-the-bag rain gear and hello to truly rideable wet weather apparel.

Representing the biggest evolutionary leap since the Gabba, the Perfetto RoS 3 is more water resistant and close fitting than ever, while also being highly breathable and stretchy enough for supreme comfort. It is intended for milder rides but has room for insulation layers as needed.

Made from a special, Castelli exclusive material, Polartec® AirCoreTM, it is sleek and smart looking, but highly practical. Taped shoulder seams, zippered vents either side of the chest and a dual opening zip, along with three rear pockets with drain holes and reflective piping, maximise its versatility.

It is also incredibly lightweight.

Great - you've heard that before, but for 2025 it's all change. It's all about the fabric...

There are moments in time where paradigm shifts are made. After 40 years of compromise, there is finally a fabric specifically engineered for the needs of cyclists, that delivers the breathability and air permeability required for higher intensity riding in changable conditions. Moreover, this fabric is light and stretchy; it is windproof and delivers sensible levels of water repelancy for almost all wet riding conditions - and it does it in a sustainable way. While historically these objectives were often diametrically opposed, Polartec's new AirCore is that shift - objectively better performance. No compromises. Environmentally sound.

For years, cycling rain gear has compromised - balancing the diametrically opposed requirements of waterproofing and breathability. Too waterproof, and cyclists experience that boil-in-the-bag feeling when they’re putting serious effort into their riding, ending up wet from sweat on the inside. Not waterproof enough, and while there will be no sweat buildup, rain will soak through the fabric, chilling the rider and making the rest of the ride uncomfortable.

Manifattura Valcismon (MVC), the home of Castelli and Sportful, came to a smart realisation in the development of its latest fabric; that many riders brave the elements and head out when it’s damp, but very few will venture out in a true downpour, instead opting for the relative comfort of the turbo

So, MVC set to work to develop its own fabric, in partnership with technical fabric manufacturer Polartec, that offers all the protection and breathability that most of us actually need when riding on a wet day, without giving undue weight to the one in a hundred who ride through epic storms.

Real world protection.

Typically, British cyclists who stay out all day will face conditions that may vary by the hour, but with less extremes of heat, wind, rain or cold than are seen in parts of Europe or the US.
Rain gear, therefore, won’t need to be up to tackling a deluge, but should be able to cope not only with a light to medium rain, but also cold gusts, and conditions that warm as the day unfolds. Breathability is paramount since perspiration has been shown to affect the performance of athletes long before precipitation does.

Ultimately, MVC decided that the key to achieving this delicate balance of protection with comfort was to concentrate on tuning the airflow through the fabric, over and above water resistance, since evaporation of sweat is controlled by air movement and the weather, and no brand can control the weather.

The ultimate aim was to achieve a high moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR), in order to accelerate heat loss and avoid the buildup of sweat inside a riders’ apparel, without losing windproofing and water resistance.

However, a high MVTR on its own isn't enough. For the last 40 years, fabrics used in cycling have been repurposed 'outdoor' fabrics and MVTR industry testing essentially fails to note whether (or how quickly) the fabric gets wet as moisture passes through it - a critical aspect for cyclists as wet fabric means a chilled rider, especially when descending.

As such the company focused on air permeability (not to be confused with wind) which is the rate of a specific volume of air allowed to pass through the fabric to aid the driving of moist air from the garment. The ideal air permeability leaving a dry, comfortable rider yet maintaining effective windproofness. Enter Polartec® AirCore™, the first technical fabric created specifically with cyclists in mind, rather than sportspeople in general.

Zero compromise.

Traditionally, ‘breathable’ has been a relative term within the industry, due to a lack of standardised testing, and any garment with an MVTR above zero has been classed ‘breathable’. AirCore™ delivers ‘Beyond Breathable Protection’, boasting an MVTR of over 35,000 g/sq m/24hrs.

That’s an impressive figure, but can still be beaten by Castelli's own Ristretto fabric, which is even more breathable, at over 40,000 g/sq m/24hrs. However, where other fabrics compromise on either waterproofing (Ristretto) or air permeability (GoreTex = Zero) to achieve this level of wicking, AirCore™ doesn’t.

It is slightly less air permeable than Ristretto, at 0.7 cubic feet per minute (cfm) compared with 1-1.5, but significantly more waterproof, with its ability to hold back a column of 5,000mm (5m) of water before it starts to seep in, compared with Ristretto’s 0mm. This makes AirCore an incredibly versatile material, perfect for riding in all sorts of conditions, especially since the average UK rainstorm drops only 800mm of rain.

Put this air permeability figure into perspective too. GoreTex is zero, meaning it literally will not breathe. Windstopper - a widely used fabric in cycling and pitched as water resistant and breathable - is only 0.25cfm - almost 3 times less effective.

Max Tech.

The secret to AirCore™’s versatility is the way it’s constructed. It makes use of electrospinning technology, where liquid polyurethane is fed through a needle in a syringe pump, then, using a high voltage of 30,000 volts, ejected as a thin jet of filaments.

As this jet travels towards a charged target collector, it thins. Dried fibres, 10 to 100 times thinner than human hairs, are deposited as a mat, and the gaps between these fibres are tiny, around two micrometres. They limit the amount of airflow within the material through a "trecherous path" (no defined regular structure), allowing the delicate balance between windproofing and breathability to be preserved. The mat is then sandwiched between a stretch face and a stretch backer to form AirCore™.

Apart from being water repellent, air permeable, breathable and windproof, the material is stretchy enough to achieve a flattering, regular fit, while letting you move and change positions freely during your ride. In fact the membrane itself can stretch up to 3 times it's original state and remain effective.

An important goal for both Castelli and Polartec was to create a sustainable material, so the face and back of AirCore™ are made from recycled fibres. It’s made from non-PFAS materials, to further reduce its environmental impact – all without compromise.

The partnership with Polartec ensures that the material will be exclusive to Castelli and Sportful (in the cycling arena) for 5 years. Making its debut in AW25, AirCore is found in Castelli’s flagship winter jackets, the Alpha 150 and the Perfetto RoS 3, both known for their formidable protection against the elements, especially on wet days, without sacrificing performance.

It will also be used in the Castelli Polare range of bib tights, the Espresso 2 Shoe Covers, the Competizione Jacket and the Entrata 2 Jacket too.

Working with Polartec®, Castelli and MVC has produced the next step in performance fabric. While MVC has materials that are more air permeable, more waterproof and better at moisture management, the new AirCore™ fabric unites all these essential qualities, while also being sustainable and stretchy, with comfort built in. It’s the perfect material for mixed weather without extremes, which is what riding in the UK is all about.

The Perfetto RoS 3 is your ultimate companion jacket. Aside from rides that extend to 5 hours+ in persistent torrential rain (the preserve of shell jackets), the AirCore fabric in the Perfetto will keep you comfortable and dry. Careful base layer choice will allow you to tailor to the conditions too, and Castelli have even intimated that it will be warm down to -5 celcius!
